Diversity Equity & Inclusion

The Department of Emergency Medicine aspires to create and maintain a provider population that mirrors the diverse patient population that we serve. We believe that diversity is integral to our success as leaders in academic medicine and excellent patient care. By creating a climate and culture of inclusion and respect, we aim to recruit, develop, and retain a diverse workforce. We encourage applications from under-represented minorities in medicine, including racial and ethnic minorities, women, and LGBTQ candidates. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, nationality, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, or any other basis prohibited by law. Our faculty participates in annual implicit bias training and practice actively combating implicit bias in our interview and selection process for faculty and house staff alike.

Current Departmental Initiatives

BUMC Emergency Medicine Women’s Group

  • The eight female faculty members and four female interns (comprising fifty percent of the intern class) meet on a quarterly basis at the house of a faculty member to foster community, support, and mentorship. In its inaugural year, topics of meetings include work-life balance, negotiation and communication skills, as well as leadership and managing up.

Institutional Commitment to DEI

  • Faculty from the Department of Emergency Medicine serve on the BUMC Diversity council and the GME Diversity Council. One of our core faculty members was also a founder of the Dr. William F. Larkin lecture series, a hospital-wide quarterly lecture series focused on using education to address and curtail overt and systemic racism, sexism, and xenophobia influencing healthcare access, delivery, and outcomes.
