Diversity Equity & Inclusion

We believe that diversity is integral to our success as leaders in academic medicine and excellent patient care. By creating a climate and culture of inclusion and respect, we aim to recruit, develop, and retain a diverse workforce. We encourage applications from under-represented minorities in medicine, including racial and ethnic minorities, women, and LGBTQ candidates. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, nationality, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, or any other basis prohibited by law.

Current Departmental Initiatives

BUMC Emergency Medicine Women’s Group

The eleven female faculty members (who make up just under half of our full time attendings) and the female residents meet on a quarterly basis to foster community, support, and mentorship.  We believe relationship-building is integral to success, happiness, and well-being.  Dedicated time together helps cultivate a supportive environment.

Visiting Medical Student Rotation Scholarship

Our residency partners with GME for our visiting medical student rotation scholarship.  This scholarship was created to advance and promote a training environment emphasizing outreach, advocacy for equitable outcomes in healthcare, and to help us build dynamic and diverse teams that serve our communities.  All medical students from LCME or AOA-accredited medical schools within the US and Puerto Rico whose home institution is outside of the DFW metroplex are welcome to apply.  Students must first submit a rotation application through the AAMC Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) site.

Social Determinants of Health Elective

This two-week non-clinical elective aims to help residents gain site-specific, locally informed knowledge of the structures and social determinants of health impacting patients in some of the neediest zip codes served by Baylor University Medical Center. The elective mirrors the “social determinants of health wheel” as built in EPIC and through the elective residents will develop strategies to assess patients’ social determinants during clinical encounters and gain an improved ability to integrate this information into medical decision-making and patient care.

Institutional Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Faculty from the Department of Emergency Medicine serve on the hospital’s Diversity Council and the Medical Education Community Engagement Committee. One of our core faculty members was also a founder of the Dr. William F. Larkin lecture series, a hospital-wide quarterly lecture series focused on using education to address and curtail overt and systemic racism, sexism, and xenophobia influencing healthcare access, delivery, and outcomes.
